We invite you to the Taste of Texas to see our most amazing acquisition since the Alamo Doors - a treasured rifle used by Robert Eden Handy in the battle of San Jacinto.
Handy co-founded Richmond, Texas and served on General Sam Houston's staff during Texas' fight for Independence. He was among the first to learn from Susanna Dickinson that the Alamo had fallen and later bravely fought in the battle of San Jacinto with Burleson's First Regiment, Texas Volunteers. He counted Deaf Smith. William Lusk, and Mirabeau B. Lamar as his friends.
His beautiful .50 caliber plains saddle rifle has a has a 31” octagon barrel and very fine Maple stock. The stock indicates it was manufactured in Pennsylvania, where Handy was born and raised. On top of the barrel is a beautiful silver escutcheon inlay with the inscription, "Robert Eden Handy, San Jacinto, April 21, 1836.”
Handy performed his duty against unthinkable odds and helped Texas to become a sovereign nation. We are thankful to be able to display this important artifact, which saw both the devastation of the Alamo and the Texian victory at San Jacinto.
