As the world begins to feel more uncertain and unstable, leadership coach and author Michael Bungay Stanier says we need leaders who are willing to be courageous and remain curious to see shifting contexts and possibilities instead of seeing the world as black and white. "What happens when things are chaotic, when things are ambiguous, often one of the things we do is we freeze, that classic fight or freeze response. So I think it takes courage to say, 'I am going to take an action. I'm actually going to move on something around this,'" Bungay Stanier says.
If you're constantly putting off tasks, you may need more "jellybeans" -- or personal energy reserves -- to get the job done, writes leadership consultant Christopher Richards, who recommends planning for projects you know will take more effort. Richards also notes that we're more productive when we identify and deal with the source of our resistance to some tasks, whether it's boredom, a fear of failing or some other reason.

Leadership transitions pose a significant challenge, with 46% underperforming and new CEOs facing a failure rate of up to 50%, according to CEB and McKinsey. Technical expertise and individual performance must give way to vision-setting, cross-functional leadership, and navigating organizational complexity. New leaders are encouraged to seek honest feedback and increase self-awareness to avoid reverting to old habits under pressure.
Mortgage benefits are increasingly attractive to Generation Z employees as rising housing costs and high interest rates make home ownership more difficult. A survey by Multiply Mortgage found that 67% of employees value the ability to get lower interest rates through employer-based benefits, and 75% would be more likely to join a company or organization that provides mortgage benefits. Employers can use mortgage benefits as a recruitment and retention tool, with 23% of employees saying the benefits could be a deciding factor in job offer acceptance.
Endurance sports like the Tour de France, which finished Stage 12 today, present extreme physical and mental challenges, with athletes facing burnout, loss of motivation, and long-term health consequences, similar to many regular workers. "Reducing training loads and, in severe cases, complete rest from sports for weeks is often necessary -- and same with psychological support," says Pedro Manonelles, former president of the governing board of the Spanish Society of Sports Medicine.
From sister publication Kiplinger: Both drivers and employers who use company cars can be held financially and legally responsible if neglected maintenance leads to an accident, especially during summer when failures are more likely. Common problems such as worn tires, fluid evaporation, and failing belts or hoses are more likely to result in accidents under heat stress.

"The Pitt" offers more realistic portrayals of death than most TV shows, thanks in part to resources developed by Dr. Shoshana Ungerleider and the End Well Project. Ungerleider's team found that over 80% of TV deaths result from violence, while only 4.3% are due to illness, which is not representative of real life. "When we overrepresent violent deaths and really inaccurately portray the end of life experience, I think that this leaves audiences really of all ages unprepared for some of the decisions that they may one day face for themselves and the people that they love," Ungerleider said.
I included the Tour de France story today because it likens the pressure athletes come under to emergency health care workers. And because my cyclist son was watching the Tour next to me, which is a summer staple in my family.
