BY MEG WINGERTER

As a health reporter, I really should have known better than to pay the estimate ahead of time for my daughter's physical therapy, but as a mom struggling to juggle everything, I gave in to the temptation to not have to worry about bills coming later.

The estimate was $326.40. I later found out that I should have owed $25, which was our copay. The provider was charging me the full amount, while also billing my insurance, so they got paid double. Who knows how long it would have gone on if I hadn't noticed that my daughter really should have hit her deductible by now and started asking questions.

Be smarter than me – don't believe that the estimate necessarily bears any resemblance to what you actually owe.
