Message from Mrs. Burke

Hello Edison Families,

I hope everyone is enjoying a restful and fun summer so far. It was great to see those of you who joined me on Wednesday for our parent coffee. Thank you for taking the time to come out and share your thoughts. I appreciated the opportunity to connect and hear your feedback about the past school year and some of the changes we’re putting in place.

Even though school is out, we’re working hard to prepare for the new year. One of the updates we’re excited about is a change to our fourth-period schedule based on staff, student, and parent feedback. Starting this fall, we’ll have a flex period every Blue Day and one Return period, providing students more opportunities for academic support and enrichment during the day.

As we look ahead, I also want to celebrate some of the progress we made last year. Our students and staff put in a lot of hard work, and it paid off. Our pass rates on state assessments improved across the board. Reading SOL scores went up by 2 percent, math by 5 percent, and science saw a 19 percent increase. We also made gains in attendance, bringing chronic absenteeism down from 18 percent to 14.5 percent. And looking forward to 2025–26, we’ve seen a 5.5 percent increase in IB course enrollment. More of our students are challenging themselves; we’re proud of that growth.

As school supplies start showing up in stores, I want to remind you that some metal binders and spiral notebooks can trigger the weapons detection system upon arrival. If possible, please consider options that use minimal metal. It helps speed up the process for everyone in the mornings.

A reminder that a new state law took effect on July 1 that limits student cell phone use as well as wireless headphones such as AirPods and Smartwatches during the school day. In FCPS, phones must be in the cell phone holder or your locker during class and in hallways. The only exception is the cafeteria during a student’s assigned lunch. Please take a moment to talk with your student about this change and the importance of following the new rules.

To support students with these changes, all 9th through 11th-grade students will be assigned lockers this year. Lockers are great places to store supplies and cell phones during the day. Seniors who would like a locker can request one, but we do not have enough to assign one to every senior automatically.

There have also been updates to some FCPS grading policies. Please see the link below for details about what’s changing and how it may affect your student. Middle and high school grading policy updates.

Fall sports tryouts begin on August 4, so students planning to participate should have a valid physical on file before then. I look forward to getting out to the field, track, or court and cheering them on.

We’ve also been making small improvements around campus. At the end of the school year, our Eagle out front got a fresh coat of paint. The stadium now has an outdoor restroom, and we’re adding new scoreboards to the baseball, softball, and main stadium fields. More updates are in the works, and I’ll share those with you in August.

Enjoy the rest of your summer, and thank you for your continued support.

Amanda Burke
