National Marine Sanctuary invites the public to art opening and presentation about the recent voyage of the Western Flyer Last spring, science illustrator and visual artist Monica Loncola (Guild of Natural and Scientific Illustrators) accompanied the historic Western Flyer in the Gulf of California, retracing the 85th anniversary of the legendary voyage of John Steinbeck and Ed Ricketts — as captured in the book “The Log From the Sea of Cortez”. As a science illustration intern with the Western Flyer Foundation (WFF), Monica’s artwork is inspired by her voyage where she explored many of the same tide pools visited by Steinbeck and Ricketts and celebrates the vibrant biodiversity found in Baja, Mexico. Her new body of work, “On the Edge of the Pacific” will be on display at an art opening on July 18, 2025 at NOAA’s Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary’s Exploration Center. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and presentations begin at 6 p.m., followed by open Q&A and mingling with the presenters from 7 - 8. p.m. Light refreshments will be served. Seating for the presentation is limited and will be first-come, first-serve. There is no cost to attend.
