Late this summer, the South Walter Reed Drive Complete Streets project will begin work on South Walter Reed Drive between 5th Street South and Columbia Pike.
Project Goals
This project will redesign the surface of South Walter Reed Drive to better balance the needs of bike, pedestrian, vehicle and transit travel.
This project will include:
- Realignment of and addition of a signal to the intersection of 9th Street South
- Improved pedestrian crossings and add protected bike lanes on both sides of S. Walter Reed Dr.
- Improved bus stops within the project area and install a bus stop island at the 9th St. S. intersection.
- Reconfigured stormwater utilities
- New trees and landscaping strips
What to Expect During Construction
The first activity of the project will realign and add a signal to the intersection of South Walter Reed Drive and 9th Street South. This work will involve demolition of the center medians, repaving the street and installing new street markings.
The project will also coordinate with Arlington Public School's Grace Hopper Center construction project on South Walter Reed Drive, and the nearby Columbia Pike Multimodal Improvements project.

The project schedule is still under development, but it is expected to be completed in mid- 2027. Stay informed of project updates on the project page and this newsletter. To stay informed of bus impacts, sign up for ART alerts and Metrobus alerts.

A new pedestrian route is in effect around the Southern Expansion Project site. Signs and fencing are in place to guide you. Follow the red dashed line in the image below to follow the detour.
If you're heading eastbound: Use South Orme St. or South Ode St. from Southgate Rd., then turn east on Columbia Pike to reach your destination.
If you're heading westbound: Use Columbia Pike heading west, then turn north on South Orme St. or South Ode St. From there, turn west on Southgate Rd. to reach your destination.
For your safety, do not use Southgate Rd (between South Ode St. and Old Columbia Pike) as a pedestrian route. This section of the road is now closed.
As always, ANC appreciates your patience and understanding. ANC will continue to provide you with significant updates. You can also find these notifications on the Southern Expansion Project page.
Questions? Please contact us at usarmy.anc.southernexpansion@army.mil.
The transportation team has received a number of common questions, so we're sharing the answers in our newsletter for everyone to learn together.
Question: Why are there new glass bus shelters on some stops on Columbia Pike, and black bus shelters on others?
Answer: The Columbia Pike Transit Shelter project is replacing old shelters with new glass shelters that include artwork by Spencer Finch inspired by the Columbia Pike community.
Road construction includes building the foundations and bus pads for the new shelters. The remaining shelters will be installed after road construction is done later this year.
