Good afternoon. It’s Monday, July 7.

In today's newsletter:

  • As Congress passed a bill that will add new red tape to federal safety net programs, a statewide audit has found that Alaska’s Department of Health is routinely failing to abide by existing federal laws governing benefits, including Medicaid and SNAP.

  • An Alaska nonprofit that supports innovative projects and startup companies is suing the U.S. Navy over a grant that it says was “arbitrarily terminated” by the Trump administration.

  • A 23-year-old Anchorage climber spent 53 days in the Alaska Range this season, twice summiting both Denali — including a solo climb of the legendary Slovak Direct route — and Mount Hunter.

While the mosquito might seem like an obvious choice, Alaska's state insect is the dragonfly, science writer Ned Rozell explains in his latest column. With maneuvering abilities akin to the most skilled bush pilot, dragonflies can stop on a dime at 35 miles an hour and even fly backward, he writes.

Anchorage weather

It's overcast and rainy today with a high around 62 degrees. The forecast calls for rain throughout much of this week, with a chance for partly sunny skies on Wednesday. Daytime temperatures will range from the low to mid-60s over the next few days.
