Dear Travel Fan, Last week I told you I’d let you know how my late-afternoon flight out of Kennedy went. The answer: Not good. A thunderstorm started just after we boarded and we were delayed a total of three hours, two of them spent alternately taxiing around the tarmac, then sitting and waiting. To help you steer clear of a similar experience, we’ve put together this guide on avoiding delays and cancellations. (And, yes, flying early in the day is on the list.) It was a busy week on Times Travel. At the beginning of the week we explained what the State Department’s travel advisory for Americans abroad meant. We also covered the news of a new suit against United Airlines charging that it had racially discriminated against a group of passengers and of a technology outage at American that delayed many flights on Friday. And our Tripped Up columnist helped out a traveler who’d damaged a rental car overseas and couldn’t get his credit card insurance to reimburse him for the cost of repairs. In a happier vein, we’ve got lots of ideas for places to explore, including the French Riviera town of Hyères, which was once home to a who’s who of Modernist artists, and has interesting architecture and wonderful beaches. Our Frugal Traveler put together a D.I.Y. cruise in the Caribbean using ferries, and in England we went on a modern version of the pilgrimage to Canterbury Cathedral, hiking, biking and riding part of the way in a vintage MG. Our 36 Hours column visits Istanbul, a city where the contemporary culture is as interesting as its history. Finally, if you’d like to get far, far away, we’ve got a roundup of off-the-grid resorts, where the greatest luxury may be that your phone won’t work. Wishing you safe and happy travels,
