Did you know that the Paris fashion week crowd could applaud? Did you know that they could applaud enthusiastically — extatically, even? Editor in chief Noah Johnson witnessed it happen twice this week: first at Dries Van Noten for recently appointed creative director Julian Klausner’s first runway show, and second at Jonathan Anderson’s first show for Dior, a standing ovation that “almost knocked me off my small wooden box,” he writes. There was good reason for the noise. At Dries, the clothes were “both safe and commercial, opulent and bold in all the right ways,” Johnson writes, giving fans a clear vision of how the beloved designer’s legacy will carry forward. And at Dior, Anderson exceeded even the highest of expectations, creating clothes “as intelligent and considered as they were easily consumable.” The message in both cases was clear: The people want good clothes. And finally, high fashion seems to be in a position to deliver. Read more of Johnson’s fashion week report below. |
