Our style expert has fallen in love with an ugly shoe

These iconic, clunky hiking sandals might be best known as a function-over-fashion choice — on the feet of sand-covered children sprinting along the beach or dads who might pair them with jeans. But lately, they’re trending among the style-conscious, too, acting as the gorp-y centerpiece of many fashion influencers’ outfits.

But for writer Hannah Frye, it’s not about how they look. “It’s about how they are undoubtedly the most versatile shoes in my closet,” she says.

They have a wide toe box that keeps feet from being cramped during all-day wear, they forgo laces for a bungee cord that gives true control over how tight you want the fit, and they’re a total breeze to clean. She can swim in a rocky lake without stubbing her toe, hike in the summer without suffering from sweaty feet, and walk around New York City with breathable but protective footwear.
