Last Saturday, Weekend Edition interviewed another Contest favorite, Eph See, about the story behind their entry, “Malachi The Uber Driver.” The Boston-based artist’s entry is about serendipitously finding a deep connection with a stranger who inspired them to continue to pursue their art.
You may remember Eph See’s entry from when Robin and Bobby featured it on Top Shelf earlier this year. On Weekend Edition, you can hear their story from Eph See themself. “I just had this moment where I was like, I think you are, like, an angel that I needed to get in this car with,” they share with host Scott Simon. “It was, like, the first song I had written in months after, like, such a huge funk, and it just spilled out of me.”
And speaking of great Boston entries, yesterday, our friends at WBUR in Boston revealed their favorite Massachusetts entry: “Good Sign” by Padma, “a pop song in the purest sense, with a sticky melody and a tight structure,” writes WBUR’s Amelia Mason. The former Contest judge says that Padma’s entry “stood out next to slicker-looking videos,” allowing for the 21-year-old artist’s songwriting to shine. You can read Mason’s full Padma profile here.
