Authorities are now targeting anyone suspected of working with foreign intelligence, saying it is for the sake of national security. As BBC Persian reports, many fear this is also a way to silence dissent and tighten control over the population. During the 12-day war, three people were executed after being accused of spying for Israel, and another three executions were carried out on Wednesday. Officials have announced the arrest of hundreds of people across the country accused of espionage, with alleged confessions from several detainees being aired on state television. |

| BEYOND THE HEADLINES | Zimbabwe's controversial land deal |
|
| | | Before the land reform programme, Zimbabwe had about 2,500 white farmers owning 4,000 farms. Credit: Getty Images | In 2000, Zimbabwe seized white-owned farms as part of a chaotic land reform plan. The current government has sought to mend fences with white farmers and offered compensation. Shingai Nyoka explains why the deal is controversial, and only a small number of farmers have accepted it so far. |
