In a dramatic, late-night shift, the government has set out big changes to its planned welfare reforms, in order to avert a threatened rebellion by more than 100 Labour backbenchers. No 10 says cuts to some disability benefits will now only hit future claimants, not those already receiving them. The new package would put the welfare system on a sustainable footing, it says. Dame Meg Hillier, who'd helped lead the rebellion, says the reforms now reflect core Labour values and she'll be backing them. The climbdown comes at the end of a stormy first year for PM Keir Starmer, with even bigger challenges yet to come.
