No FIFO for BHM: After acquiring the Rasp Mine late last year the new operators say they've got a number of vacancies they're hoping to fill. Broken Hill Mines Limited took over operations in the centre of the city from Japanese company Toho Zinc in November. BHM has made its plans for expansion no secret, stating it intends to increase its workforce in the future as it looks to bring the Pinnacles mine, 15 kilometres south-west of the city, online.
In the meantime, it says it's looking to fill multiple vacancies at various entry level positions, including roles as utility and service crew, as well as more truck and loader operators. It is not allowing any fly-in-floy-out arrangements.
Union approves of mine policy: A Broken Hill mining union delegate says he's pleased to see the new operators of the Rasp Mine are prioritising local employees over fly-in-fly-out workers. New South Wales Mine Workers Alliance spokesperson Todd Ferguson says it's a good sign that the company recognises the value of local jobs.
Mining communities need money: The Broken Hill City Council says several long-term development projects have been delayed due to the loss of government funding exclusive to mining communities. In 2023, the New South Wales government axed the state's Resources for Regions Fund, which contributed millions of dollars to council infrastructure projects annually. Deputy Mayor Jim Hickey says having to compete with other regional councils through the replacement Regional Development Trust means many builds are on indefinite hold.
