Terry Moran Is Latest in the TV News–to–Substack Pipeline

It’s been quite a week for Terry Moran, who posted on X about “world-class hater” Stephen Miller on Sunday and was exiting ABC News after 28 years by Tuesday. The following day, Moran, who is now referring to himself as an “independent journalist” on X, posted a video announcing his shift to Substack.

He’s not the only one to make such a change, as other faces familiar to TV-news viewers, from Don Lemon to Chuck Todd to Joy Reid, have similarly gone independent, building audiences on platforms like Substack and YouTube. “Don’t look back. This is the future,” CNN anchor turned Substacker Jim Acosta urged Moran in an interview with Natalie Korach, while Chris Cillizza, another CNN alum, said, “There has never been a better time to be on your own, making news content free of legacy media.”

Zooming out to politics, with Donald Trump holding a huge military parade in Washington today and protests expected in Los Angeles and elsewhere, Eric Lutz explores this explosive time in American politics and whether top officials, like Pete Hegseth, could defy court orders. Speaking of California, Kase Wickman finds Governor Gavin Newsom taking “on the mantle of Democratic Party troll in chief, using memes and shareable content across social media to mock and pick fights with Donald Trump.”

Plus, as “No Kings” demonstrations spread across the United States, Clive Irving reports how an actual monarch, King Charles, has been “irked by Trump’s proposal that Canada should become the 51st state.” And Nate Freeman dives into Trump’s latest Smithsonian showdown.

Look for developments around what’s sure to be an eventful weekend on our site, and we’ll be back in your inbox Tuesday. Thanks for reading!
