Juneteenth is not just a day off of school and work — it’s a holiday with profound historical significance.

Juneteenth commemorates the day slaves in Texas learned they were free —June 19,1865, two years after Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation and two months after the Civil War ended.

Four years ago, Black and allied voices who worked to get Juneteenth recognized as a national holiday were finally heard. Former President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act on June 17, 2021, officially marking June 19 as a federal holiday.

“People keep talking about how men are hard to please and how ya’ll don’t know what we want for Father’s Day,” he begins in the TikTok. “Let me help you out. We’re not hard to please.”
