VHSL Physical Updated Information for 2025-2026
Legislation introduced in the Virginia General Assembly and recently signed into law will result in two significant changes to the athletic pre-participation examination (physical) requirements for FCPS student-athletes:
- Beginning July 1, 2025, athletic physicals will be considered valid for a period of 14 months from the date the form is signed by the medical provider completing the exam. This is the date on page 3 of the VHSL Athletic Participation/Parent Consent/Physical Examination Form (revised January 2021).
- Beginning May 1, 2025, FCPS student-athletes are EXPECTED to have athletic physicals completed on the new VHSL Athletic Participation/Parental Consent/Evaluation Form (revised April 2025).
Atoms Athletics Recap
Baseball played their final regular season game and first round National District Tournament game this week. On Monday, the Atoms went into the evening as the number 7 seed, needing a win to be the 6 and a potential region berth. The Atoms didn't hold back as they scored a couple runs early to set the tone and ran away from the Eagles in a key district matchup and securing the 6 seed. However, the Atoms turned around and had a return trip to Edison Thursday evening for the first round but the result was not the same as the Eagles turned the tide and put the Atoms away. The Atoms qualify for the region tournament with their next game on Tuesday, May 27.
Softball traveled to Edison for their final regular season game vs the Eagles. The Eagles bats were hot early and often throughout the game as they put the Atoms away to secure the number one seed while the Atoms locked up the 5 seed in the National District Tournament. The Atoms had the pleasure of making the trip down Route 1 to Mt. Vernon Thursday. Unfortunately, the hot bats for the opponent continued as the Atoms were unable to match the Majors on the scoreboard. The Atoms have qualified for the region tournament that begins on May 27.
Boys Lacrosse had their season come to a close Thursday evening as they traveled to Edison for the first round of the district tournament. The Atoms played the Eagles tough early but were unable to keep up throughout marking the ending to their season. The Atoms displayed grit, growth, and determination throughout the season and despite losing several seniors, they return a young core looking to continue the growth from the 2025 season.
Girls Lacrosse had a matchup with the number one seed TJ Thursday evening in the first round. TJ overpowered the Atoms from the first faceoff to leave no doubt as they went on to advance to the district semifinals. The Atoms were a team that played with passion and a never give up attitude as they say good bye to their seniors and start to turn their sights to 2026.
Boys Soccer needed a win in their final game vs Mt. Vernon to lock in the two seed. Early on the game was a back and forth game with both teams getting great looks at the goal and being tied 1-1 into the second half. The Atoms were able to get a second one by the goalie and go on to win the game. The first round matchup was another date with the Majors Friday evening. The game was a nailbiter despite the Atoms holding a 4-2 lead late into the second half. The Majors scored two late ones in extra time to send the game into OT. Despite playing down two players and facing a 5-4 deficit early in OT, the Atoms showed determination and returned the favor a minute later to knot it 5-5 and send it to the second OT. A corner kick slipped past the goalie to make it 6-5 and the Atoms held on from there to move on to welcome Falls Church Tuesday evening at 5:00pm.
Girls Soccer made a trip to Mt. Vernon for their final tune up of the regular season with the Majors Monday evening. The Atoms needed the win to secure a tie for first place and they didn't disappoint as they stayed with their theme of the season, shutouts! The Atoms were all over the Majors and put a couple in the back of the net to come home with a 2-0 win. The Atoms didn't win the tiebreaker, settling for the two seed and a matchup with Lewis. Friday evening was a display of the Atoms skills as they went out to a 5-0 lead at the half and cruised to a 7-1 district tournament win. Next up is a semifinal matchup with Hayfield or Falls Church Tuesday evening at 7:00pm.
Boys Tennis had their singles and double district tournament matches this week at TJ. Unfortunately for the Atoms, the matchups didn't play in their favor as they fell in each match to bring the their tournaments to an end. The team however qualified for the region tournament and will play at Fairfax Wednesday, May 21 at 4:00pm.
Girls Tennis played their singles and double district tournament at Annandale this week. Lizzie Gronberg and the duo of Gronberg and Josie McElveen won their first round matchups to move on to the second round. Unfortunately, their second round matchups didn't work out like they would have hoped bringing the girls tennis season to a close.
Outdoor Track had their first day of the National District Championship Meet Wednesday at Falls Church. The Atoms put on their best effort and couple of them putting up qualifying times for the region meet. Day two of the district meet in this morning at Falls Church and several more Atoms take their last opportunity to qualify for the region meet.
