A Message from the Principal

Greetings Irving Families,

We are excited about the fun activities coming up for our students over the next few weeks as we close out the school year. We want to make sure everyone is able to enjoy the activities we have planned and ask that you help us by reminding students that the Students Rights and Responsibilities is in effect through the last day of school, Wednesday, June 11.

First up in our end of year activities is the 8th grade Career Fair and we hope you can help us make this day a success. The 8th Grade Career Fair is on Thursday, May 29th from 7:30 am - 10:30 am. We want to make sure we provide our students a wide variety of career exploration options; if you are willing to share your career experience with our students, please contact Katie Richter at kerichter@fcps.edu

A reminder, the 8th grade dance is quickly approaching (Friday, May 30) and we are in need of chaperones. Our chaperones help with set up, serving food and drinks, monitoring the game areas and our photo area, and help with clean up. The 8th grade celebration is a success because of the help from parents/guardians AND you do NOT have to be an 8th grade parent/guardian to help out!

On Tuesday, June 10, we will hold our annual Team Day Celebration - this day is filled with fun activities and a celebration of the school year with each team. It is a busy day, and we want to make sure students are prepared. Please make sure your child brings a labeled water bottle, a hat, and sunscreen. We also ask that students dress appropriately to be outside and active for the field day portion of the day.

With the warmer weather, we have noticed more students walking and riding bikes to school. These walkers and bike riders must use our crosswalks to get to the building. To ensure everyone arrives safely, I am asking that students be dropped off in the Kiss and Ride, ONLY. Please do not drop students off while waiting in the Kiss and Ride line on Old Keene Mill Road or in the buses only entrance, it is not safe. Also, our buses are very full - a reminder- we are not permitted to provide bus passes to students who would like to ride home with a friend on a bus.

Lastly, I would like to wish our Track and Field Team all the best in the last meet of the season at West Springfield High School tomorrow. We have several students who have already qualified for the Championship Meet at Robinson Secondary on Saturday, May 31. We have been so impressed by how much each student athlete has improved this season. Good luck!

Take Care!

Cindy Conley

8th Grade Career Fair - May 29 from 7:30-10:30 am

We will be hosting a career fair for our 8th grade students on Thursday, May 29 from 7:30 am -10:30 am. Students will be able to hear about careers in Science, Engineering, the Military and much more, along with information about programs available within FCPS such as the high school academies. We would like to ensure we offer students as many career exploration opportunities as possible. If you or someone you know would be willing to speak about their career, please email Katie Richter at kerichter@fcps.edu

8th Grade Celebration

Friday, May 30 from 6:00-8:00 pm

  • The purpose of this event is to have fun and celebrate one last time as a class before they head out for the summer and on to high school.
  • Only 8th grade students attending Irving Middle School may attend.
  • The 8th grade celebration is NOT a formal event
  • This event will be in our 7th grade gym and out on our tennis courts/black top (weather permitting). Students should be comfortable to dance, play games, and likely take a lot of pictures in our photo section with the horseman backdrop.
    • In previous years, students have worn a pair of slacks and a polo type shirt or a skirt/blouse or dress, again NO formal attire or high heels are required or recommended for this event (often high heels are taken off within about 5 minutes of arriving…).
  • Students often attend in groups, so having a “date” is NOT a requirement to attend.
  • We will be utilizing outdoor spaces for the event - fingers crossed for good weather!
  • We need volunteers to make this celebration a success - please see the link below to volunteer as a chaperone for the 8th Grade Celebration and/or donate snacks. Thank you in advance for helping us make this celebration a successful event for our students.
