It’s not the way they wanted it to happen, but the season-ending knee injury suffered by Triston Casas has opened a window for the Red Sox to call up Roman Anthony or Marcelo Mayer.
The least-complicated way would be for Rafael Devers to come to the conclusion that $313.5 million brought the Red Sox the right to tell him to move to first base.
Then Anthony or Mayer could be called up to DH and fill in at other positions. Obviously, that would be the outfield for Anthony and the infield for Mayer.
This doesn’t seem likely to happen any time soon. So what then?
