It’s hard to believe, but in New York City, a built-in ice cube maker is a luxury. In my apartment, I had initially used the typical off-white plastic tray (you know the one), but found it difficult to store and only gave me 12 measly ice cubes. When it broke in half, I decided it was time for a change. My coworker (and NBC Select reporter) Zoe Malin recommended this manual ice cube maker, and I immediately added to cart.
It comes with two or three trays that make small ice cubes, plus a container to store the surplus (it’s also available on Amazon). Once the ice cubes are frozen, flip the trays over, place them on top of the bin and cover with the lid. Then, you press down to force the ice cubes out. It’s quick, easy and gives you enough ice for several drinks.
When I host people over, I no longer have to ration the 12 ice cubes I get from that plastic tray — now, I can make extra ice and store it while also freezing more. It’s compact enough to store in a small space, and the lid protects my ice cubes from nasty freezer smells. We love abundant, smell-free ice that doesn’t take up too much space.
