Greetings Irving Families,
It's showtime! Tonight is opening night of Frozen! Our students and staff have worked so hard to prepare this outstanding musical. I want to thank the volunteers who painted scenes, sewed costumes, and helped with choreography, singing, lighting, sound, and so much more. I also must thank, Mr. King for his unwavering support of the performing arts and for providing this amazing opportunity for our students. There are still a few tickets left for the shows tomorrow night at 7:00 pm and the sing-along show at 2:00 pm on Sunday.
- A reminder, all students MUST be accompanied by and supervised throughout the show by an adult. Students without an adult will not be permitted into the show.
Below in our newsletter we have information about activities and events happening at Irving, in our pyramid and in the division. One of the most important happens next week. I encourage all parents/caregivers to attend, the Kids in Today's Society presentation provided by the Fairfax County Police Department and sponsored by our PTA on Wednesday, February 26, 6:00–7:30 PM. Due to the nature of the presentation, this is an adult only presentation and no one under the age of 18 will be permitted. Please join us to hear about what children are facing in our community, what to be on the lookout for, and the support resources available.
Lastly, a reminder that our yearbook is still on sale for just a few more weeks. Our students and yearbook sponsor, Ms. Monk have been putting together creative pages with beautiful pictures that capture this outstanding school year. Don't miss your chance to order a yearbook by clicking on the link below.
Take Care!

The student information session will be held on Monday, March 24, during 1st period advisory. We will use this time to review who we have forms for as well as information about practices and meets. It will be very similar to the information shared at the info session on March 4.
The first practice will be on Thursday, April 3 at 3:30. Practices will be held every Tuesday and Thursday from 3:30-4:30 pm, throughout the season. A reminder that the registration form is live and available HERE. Students who wish to participate in track MUST have a sports physical dated after May 1, 2024. If your child participated in cross country in the fall, they do not need to get another physical, but they do need to register for track through the form above. Irving MS Meditation and Silent Reflection Space Practices and Procedures
In alignment with FCPS Regulation 1502, Irving MS ensures that students and staff of all religious backgrounds have reasonable accommodations and access to meditation and silent reflection spaces within the school building. The following are our guidelines, in accordance with updated Regulation 1502.
- Our meditation and silent reflection spaces are located in the Principal’s Conference Room in the Main Office and in Barker Hall should a larger space be needed.
- Meditation and silent reflection space may change as needed, but we will make our effort to keep students and staff informed of the location changes as they occur.
- Supervision, as available, will be provided in the meditation and silent reflection space. Due to safety or supervision issues, a school may not be able to provide a meditation and silent reflection space on a temporary basis but shall work with individual students on other possible ways to accommodate their prayer, meditation, and silent reflection needs.
Prayer, Meditation, and Silent Reflection during Instructional Time
- Students are only permitted to use Meditation and Silent Reflection rooms during instructional time when there is a request that cannot be accommodated in any other way that does not impact instruction. Without an approved accommodation to address a need that warrants missing class, students are not permitted to use the rooms during instruction.
- Parents/caregivers must provide written permission for students to miss instructional time on a regular basis. Please use this Google Form to give permission for their child to utilize the meditation and silent reflection space during instructional times.
Use of Meditation and Silent Reflection Spaces
- Individuals using the space shall abide by the following rules and guidelines
- Intended for personal use
- Respect the rights and beliefs of others
- The meditation and silent reflection space may be used for individual or group prayer, meditation, or silent reflection.
- The use of the meditation and silent reflection space shall be voluntary, and no student or staff member will be compelled to use or participate in activities within the space.
- The Students Rights and Responsibilities applies to all students who use the space.
- The reflection space is available during regular hours: 7:30 am - 2:15 pm.
- Students should report to the Main Office to check in.

Library News
Next Wednesday, February 26, young adult author, Neal Shusterman, will present to Irving students through a Zoom presentation. Copies of Mr. Shusterman’s, All Better Now, released on Tuesday, February 4, have been given to students who have registered to attend the presentation. The new book will be the focus of his presentation, but he will be eager to field questions from our students about his other books, which have been very popular among our Irving readers. Students who are Shusterman fans should definitely stop by the library to make sure that they are included in the Zoom visit on the February 26!
This week we have new news to share from “Irving Says…” This week’s question asked students if they’d rather be IMPERVIOUS to temperature change, or to be able to become CAMOUFLAGED at will? An overwhelming majority of 80% of students would rather be able to slip into the background and become camouflaged in their surroundings, rather than be impervious to temperature change. Ask your Irving student what other new vocabulary words they are learning in classes; you might have to move a dictionary onto the dining room table for help with conversation! Keep reading!
