Message from Principal Burke

Dear Edison Families,

I want to take a moment to reflect on yesterday's events and express my deep pride in our staff, students, and our response during the incident. I am incredibly grateful for the swift and professional actions of our entire security team, which includes our School Resource Officer (SRO), Safety and Security Specialist, and Safety and Security Assistants. Their teamwork and dedication were essential in ensuring the safety of all our students and staff.

Today, FCPD Assistant Chief Wright visited to express her gratitude for our SRO, Officer Ashraf, and the security team’s hard work. Moments like these remind me just how lucky we are to have such strong support from both our school security staff and our local law enforcement.

I also want to acknowledge our administrative team, who followed our FCPS crisis procedures with care and precision. Their leadership and ability to remain calm and organized were vital in managing the situation effectively. Additionally, a heartfelt thank you to our Region 3 Office for being on-site to support us in any way we needed. Your continued presence and care make a difference every day.

Despite the week's challenges, it’s been an exciting time for Edison in athletics and the arts! Our boys’ and girls’ basketball teams had a fantastic week, and tonight there’s a district championship doubleheader at Hayfield—come out and support your Eagles!

Our theater group also recently competed in the Regional One Act competition. While they didn’t advance, I want to congratulate Cora Reese and Nethee Pelekasis for earning gold medals for their acting performances. It was truly inspiring to see the growth and improvement of our students from districts to regionals.

We also have some impressive achievements from our Speech and Debate Team! Congratulations to Jacob Hannan for taking 4th place in Impromptu Speech, and to Josie Holgren for her 3rd place finish in Storytelling and qualifying for the state speech tournament.

Thank you to the parents who attended our PTSA meeting this week. Engaging in meaningful discussions about how we can continue to improve and support our school community is always so valuable.

Looking ahead, I’m excited for our Athletic Boosters Bingo Night tomorrow at 6 PM in the cafeteria—let’s come together for some fun! And next week marks the start of spring sports tryouts—best of luck to our athletes!

Thank you for your continued support, and have a wonderful weekend, Edison!

Edison’s Jackson Byrd - one of our theatre and choir performers (class of 2026) - performed with the new a Capella group Capital Force at Alexandria’s George Washington National Masonic Hall Auditorium on Sat., Feb. 15, 2025. Capital Force is a part of the Alexandria A Cappella Collective. Jackson explained, “I was able to perform with them on Saturday. I am in the opening number as well as the closing number.”

(Starting at mark 26:11), Jackson can be seen on the far left of the small ensemble when they sing “You Can’t Stop the Sun.”
