Message from Mr. Greata
We are incredibly proud of our students who recently participated in two Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) presentations.
Earlier this month, we had the honor of hosting Get2Green leaders from across the county for a special screening of Just Eat It, a documentary about food waste and a community’s response to the issue. Following the film, our students joined other county representatives in a meaningful discussion, showcasing both their deep knowledge of the topic and their leadership in planning and presenting the event.
This past week, our students also played a key role in planning and presenting the Black History Month Kickoff event, hosted by the FCPS Chief Equity Office. We are so proud of Kevin Leiva, Sean Cranford, Elijah Wickham, Yeamlak Tekabe, Hiroko Rose, and Jabari Britt for their contributions to this outstanding program. Please check out this link for more information and to watch the full video. We hope to make this event a cherished tradition at Carter G. Woodson High School and encourage our community to join us next year!
With spring around the corner, we want to highlight our commitment to environmental sustainability—and Carter G. Woodson High School has so much to celebrate! We are proud to be a Green Flag School, one of only a few secondary schools in FCPS to receive this prestigious honor. Thanks to the dedication and hard work of our students and staff under the leadership of Lauren Kinne, we earned this distinction from the National Wildlife Federation in both 2022 and 2024. To put this achievement into perspective, only 56 Green Flags were awarded across the entire United States last year!
In addition, our Environmental Club and Green Team play an essential role in maintaining our school’s sustainability efforts. They plant and care for our school’s garden, which grows more than 20 varieties of fruits and vegetables. The harvest is then donated to a local food bank, and to date, our students have contributed over 691 pounds of fresh produce to the community.
One of our most impactful environmental initiatives is the Revitalize, Restore, and Replant Project, led by Emma Miller and Katie Cole-Kelly. This watershed program focuses on planting native species in stormwater areas to prevent erosion and runoff. Acceptance into this grant program is highly competitive, and we want to highlight the incredible effort that went into making it happen. Johnny Shu is also instrumental in helping students from the National Science Honor Society run our school’s recycling program. Since our recycling efforts rely entirely on student leadership, we are incredibly grateful for their dedication.
If students are interested in getting involved in any of these green initiatives, we encourage them to reach out to the Environmental Club for more information.
Finally, come out and support our boys' basketball team as they take on West Potomac in the District Championship Game tonight at 6:00 p.m. at South County. Let’s cheer them on as they compete for the title!
Thank you for your continued support of our school community!

Counselor Corner
Counselors completed Academic Advising with rising seniors over the last two weeks and began seeing rising juniors this week. The course selection forms and other helpful and important information can be found on both our Academic Advising website, as well as our Academic Advising padlet. Please note: Driver’s Ed is now offered through Health & PE 10 with FCPS over the summer.
We love seeing our students and are excited to continue our Advising meetings through March 7. We are directing students to grade level padlets (Junior, Sophomore, Freshman) for college & career planning resources. A valuable resource for rising seniors is our Next Steps document which guides students to take the needed steps to reach their goals, no matter their post-secondary plans, whether it be college, technical school, military or workforce. College-bound students can download the Application Tracker to start organizing their colleges list and application components. Remember to enter admissions risk per college so you have a balanced list.
Speaking of seniors, all mid-year transcripts were uploaded last week. If you receive emails from your colleges, they understand the transcripts are on their way. Most colleges should have mid-year transcripts by now.
Lastly, thank you to our amazing community for celebrating us during National School Counselor Week! We care deeply about the work we do and seek to provide a positive impact on the emotional and academic wellness of each and every Woodson student. Helping to put the pieces together for students seeking their next steps to take in life is a genuine privilege and we take pride in being a safe place and guiding light in that endeavor.

Please join Woodson’s Unified Special Olympics team as they take on the Lake Braddock Bruins at our FanQuest on Friday, March 14th. Tailgate starts at 5:00 p.m. and the game starts at 6:30 p.m. in the main gym.

Become Unskippable: Practical Guidance for Talking With Teens About Fentanyl
Teens skip things that don't interest them, including lectures from their parents. But young people die from fentanyl overdoses in Fairfax County each year — so it's important to have short, impactful talks with your teen, whether or not you think they’re at risk.
As a parent or caregiver, you have the power to become “unskippable” and talk with your teen in a way they will listen.
See our tips for talking with your teen about fentanyl and other difficult subjects. Watch this video to learn more about becoming unskippable.
Student Fasting Meal Kits for February 28 - March 28
Thanks to a new program from the Virginia Department of Education, students who are fasting during the school day between February 28 and March 28 can now take school meal kits home at the end of the day.
Families will need to fill out a weekly Fasting Meals Request Form for their child or children to receive school meal kits. A separate form must be filled out for each week and each student.
To receive meal kits for Friday, February 28, and the week of March 3, please submit the first request form by Monday, February 24. Visit the FNS webpage for more information, including weekly request forms and deadlines.
