Do you use phonics posters to teach your students the sounds of different graphemes?
Most alphabet cards show a picture next to the letter. There's an apple beside the a, but the apple's shape has nothing to do with the letter.
Embedded picture mnemonics work differently. The picture is built right into the shape of the letter. The a is drawn as an apple, the c as a cat, and the f as a fish. Each picture starts with the letter's sound, and it helps kids remember that sound.
This isn't just a cute idea. Back in 1984, Linnea Ehri and her colleagues found that children learned letter sounds better when pictures were embedded in the letters themselves.
More recently, Roberts and Sadler (2019) found that preschoolers taught with embedded picture mnemonics and short stories significantly outperformed children taught with plain letters on letter-sound identification, blending, and identifying the first sound in a word.
That's why we created our original mnemonic alphabet. Teachers loved it so much that we made a second set!
Set 1, Mnemonic Alphabet Flash Cards & More, is also $7 through Monday. It has alphabet charts, flash cards, tracing cards, desk strips, and letter tiles for building CVC words.
P.S. If you're a skimmer, here's the scoop! Our NEW Embedded Picture Mnemonics Set 2 (digraphs, vowel teams, and more) is just $7, and so is our original Mnemonic Alphabet. That's half price. The sale ends Monday. Grab Set 2 for $7 or grab Set 1 for $7.
