Scientists have found microplastics in nearly every part of the human body — in people’s lungs, bloodstreams and even placentas.

They have been linked to a higher chance of heart attacks, strokes and inflammatory bowel syndrome, but the mechanism by which microplastics raise these health risks has remained murky. A new study offers a possible explanation — one that calls into question a long-held assumption about plastics.
