Itinerary
Please note that this itinerary may change depending on the varying weather conditions.
Day 1 (06/09/2027) – Flying From Keflavík To Kulusuk And Sailing To Tasiilaq
We meet at Keflavík International Airport in the afternoon and fly to Kulusuk in Greenland (included). From the airport it’s an easy walk of about a kilometre down to the harbour while the luggage goes ahead separately, and from there two private boats take us to Tasiilaq, a 45 to 60 minute crossing. Tasiilaq is home for the next six nights, at Hotel Angmagssalik. A light dinner waits at the hotel, and if the sky clears we keep an eye out for the northern lights.
Day 2 (07/09/2027) – Hann Glacier In Johan Petersen Fjord
Our first full day on the boats. We head into Johan Petersen Fjord towards Hann Glacier, working the icebergs and islands along the way, with a chance of whales there and back.
Day 3 (08/09/2027) – Knud Rasmussen Glacier & The Remains Of A US Airbase
We sail up Ammassalik Fjord for about an hour before turning into narrower, steeper fjords. Northwest of Tasiilaq, the United States ran an airbase from 1942 to 1947, code-named Bluie East Two, and what’s left of it still lies around Ikateq. Further on, two calving glaciers come into view at once: Karale on the left and Knud Rasmussen straight ahead. We go ashore close to Knud Rasmussen Glacier for one to two hours before sailing back to Tasiilaq.
Day 4 (09/09/2027) – Ammassalik & Ikasagtivaq Fjords
A day on the water in the Ammassalik and Ikasagtivaq fjords, looking for icebergs and whales. If the ice allows, we go much deeper into the fjord system.
Day 5 (10/09/2027) – Tasiilaq On Foot
A day on land. There’s time to walk the Valley of the Flowers and other trails right outside Tasiilaq, and time for some editing sessions. Sunset and, with luck, the northern lights after dark.
Day 6 (11/09/2027) – Ikasagtivaq Fjord To Tiniteqilaaq
We sail along Ammassalik Fjord and through the deep Ikasagtivaq Fjord to Tiniteqilaaq, a small settlement on a peninsula above Sermilik Fjord, where huge icebergs drift past. We spend about two hours there and eat our packed lunch on the shore. Whales are common in the Ammassalik fjords from mid-July to the end of September, so keep a long lens handy on the way.
Day 7 (12/09/2027) – Aputsiaq Glacier Ice Cave & On To Kulusuk
We leave Tasiilaq and head out into open water past a lot of big icebergs, with a chance of humpback, minke and fin whales. At Aputsiaq Glacier a trained glacier guide takes us into a 40 metre deep ice cave, with helmets and crampons supplied. The boats then drop us in Kulusuk for the night at Hotel Kulusuk, with sunset and, if it clears, a last chance at the northern lights.
Day 8 (13/09/2027) – Kulusuk & Flying Back To Iceland
A last day in Kulusuk. Our luggage stays at the hotel while we explore the settlement and the area around it, with lunch at the hotel and an editing session if there’s time. In the evening we walk to the airport and fly back to Keflavík (included), landing at about 21:45.
