Dear Colleagues,

As summer draws to a close and we welcome in the fall, I would like to take this opportunity to reflect on the past several months and to express my sincere appreciation for the hard work and dedication demonstrated by each member of our research department.

This summer has been both productive and busy for our research team here at the Providence VAMC. Across our ongoing studies, new protocols, and the daily operational work that underpins all that we do, I have observed a consistent level of commitment and professionalism that speaks highly of this department. Despite the demands of a particularly active season, our team has continued to perform at a high standard, ensuring that our research efforts remain focused on their ultimate purpose: improving outcomes and quality of life for the Veterans we are privileged to serve.

As we transition into the fall season, I have every confidence that this department will continue to uphold the excellent standards it has set. I look forward to the continued success of our work together in the months ahead.

New research: MDMA-assisted therapy for veterans with PTSD and alcohol use disorder

A new research project being conducted at the Providence VA is making headlines. The study will use a longitudinal design to conduct a randomized controlled trial of MDMA-AT for Veterans with PTSD-AUD. Eligible participants will complete an in-person baseline assessment, engage in MDMA-assisted therapy or identical psychotherapy with low dose ("active placebo") MDMA with trained therapist dyads, and complete assessments at post-treatment, 3-, and 6-month follow-ups. Dr. Mantsounga has received an R01 award from the National Institute of Health (NIH) totaling $2,435,113 over five years for a project titled, “Immune-mediated mechanisms of VEGF-A165 alternative splicing in angiogenesis in the context of Advanced Aging”.
