October 10, 2026 - You ever feel like you’ve discovered a new collecting rabbit hole? This week it occurred to me that we might be in the midst of a mini-trend, or maybe it’s as simple as a small group of like minded aging millennials having the same idea about something that fizzled out decades before they were born. I’ve always loved Art Deco watches and I’ve noticed I’ve been drawn to a handful in recent years that seem to take an almost maximalist or exaggerated point of view on the design cues most often associated with it. One of my favorite examples is this watch from the Impossible Watch Company, which I profiled here. It bears a striking resemblance to the Baume & Mercier Shogun, a long-lost cult favorite that is currently experiencing a bit of a revival, Ming’s fifth generation case design. Bremoir is another brand that is explicitly riffing on specific Art Deco references in architecture, and if you’re a nerd for architecture, there’s a lot to like there. And then there’s this week’s release of our new limited edition with echo/neutra, a Rivanera with a metallic, multi-textured dial inspired by Art Deco motifs and imagery. When I saw a prototype of this watch a few months ago I knew I’d have to have one, and wasted no time when they dropped a few days ago. Am I biased in my admiration for this watch? Perhaps. But wearing it around these last few days has me convinced I need a Shogun to complement it.
