Protests in Europe

  • Maricarmen Abascal was evicted from her apartment of more than 70 years last month. She died on Wednesday after suffering severe anxiety and exhaustion. In between, her story sparked mass protests that led the prime minister to call for early elections. Trade unions called for a strike.
  • France’s government promised to address teenagers’ grievances about dilapidated school buildings and teacher shortages without offering details. Police said they would stop using stun grenades against protesters after one of those devices blew a 15-year-old’s hand off.

  • Russia pounded Ukraine with missiles and drones. More than 30 people died in the attacks, including children, Volodymyr Zelenskiy said. Russian and US officials, including Jared Kushner, are talking about bringing a US investor into the Nord Stream pipelines that delivered gas to Germany before Russia invaded Ukraine.
  • Exclusive: The US once sought to isolate Myanmar’s military-installed government. Now the two sides are discussing scam centers and Myanmar’s rare-earth mineral deposits.
  • Syria might deploy troops to help Saudi Arabia fight the Iran-backed Houthi forces of Yemen. Britain’s nearly 200-year-old consulate in Jerusalem will remain open on a smaller scale and with a new name after resolving a dispute over Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank.

United States

  • People who voted for Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential election are not pumped about showing up at the polls for this November’s midterm elections, a Reuters/Ipsos poll found.
  • Democrats still could throw away that edge as candidates in tight races in the Midwest split over the party’s strategy for transgender rights. Learn more on today’s Reuters World News podcast.
  • Democratic Party officials sued the president, seeking a court order to block the administration from using taxpayer money to pay for election-related TV ads.
  • Christa Pike awoke angry and confused after Tennessee failed to execute her, her lawyers said. The all-female execution team used at least seven needles in the attempt, one of which was bent 90 degrees when they pulled it out of her, they said.
  • Pete Hegseth praised the resilience of sailors in the USS Abraham Lincoln for carrier group for their extra-long deployment in which eight service members tried to kill themselves.
  • Alabama, Arkansas and Louisiana are asking courts to classify abortion drugs as a public nuisance as they try to restrict access to pills shipped from out of state.
