There is a particular sense of calm at the BEAR SANCTUARY Müritz in the early morning.

Before the day's routine begins, the majestic surroundings offer a moment to reflect on the impact of this place and the lives it has changed.

What may appear as an ordinary scene – a bear foraging through leaves, resting beneath the trees, or exploring its enclosure – represents something extraordinary. It is the result of years of care, dedication, and a commitment to provide bears with a second chance at life.

These moments tell a powerful story, and I will be delighted to share it with you.

My name is Charlotte Lauren Paul, and I am an animal caretaker and trainer at BEAR SANCTUARY Müritz, the largest bear sanctuary in Western Europe, nestled in the heart of Germany. Here, 11 rescued bears have found a safe place to call home.
The sanctuary provides them with space and peace they need to recover from trauma.

My colleague Beatrice Heintz, International Legacy Specialist at FOUR PAWS, asked me to invite you to our special webinar Paving the Way to a Better Future: Inside FOUR PAWS Bear Sanctuaries.

Opened as the very first FOUR PAWS sanctuary, Arbesbach became the model for the many sanctuaries that followed. Today, four bears call it home, and its success continues to demonstrate what is possible when animals are given the care and space they deserve.

Yet beyond the sanctuary fences, many bears are waiting for their second chance. Bears used in circuses, restaurants, and the bile industry still need our help.

This is why long-term planning is so important, allowing us to remain ready to rescue and care for bears in need for years to come.
