What’s next for Iran? Two essays in the forthcoming issue of Foreign Affairs offer different answers to that question. Ali Vaez, an Iran scholar who was involved in the 2015 nuclear negotiations, writes that “the conflict is nowhere near over.” He makes the case that the war will neither resolve nor dramatically escalate in the foreseeable future. The Texas A&M University professor Mohammad Ayatollahi Tabaar, by contrast, argues that Iran will likely escalate and “is developing its own version of Israel’s ‘mowing the lawn’ strategy.” He warns that Tehran could soon cut undersea cables, assassinate American or Israeli officials, or “even launch ground offensives against its neighbors.”
