Sweden: New Rules Prohibit Mobile Phone Use During the School Day

On August 1, 2026, new rules took effect prohibiting students from using cellphones in Swedish compulsory schools during the school day. (5 ch. 4 § Skollagen [School Act] (SFS 2010:800).) The Swedish Parliament adopted the rules on June 3 through an amendment to the School Act, which must be followed by all schools in Sweden.Under the new rules, students in compulsory comprehensive school (grundskola), from preschool through ninth grade, must hand over their cellphones at the start of the school day and receive them back at the end of the day.
