In September 2026, the New Zealand Parliament passed bills that introduce new police powers to deal with public disorder and a new “boot camp” sentencing option for youth offenders. Lawmakers approved the two bills in their final reading under an “urgency” motion before Parliament adjourned ahead of the general election scheduled for November 7, 2026.
