Introducing Arcadia by John Akomfrah

We have a groundbreaking artwork taking up residency in our Jerwood Gallery, Arcadia by John Akomfrah. Free to visit, opens Friday 6 November 2026 to Monday 3 May 2027.

In this cinematic experience, Akomfrah takes you across time, from the pursuit of the New World in the 1400s to the present day and asks us what damage has been done? What was the impact on people and planet? Finally, what is our legacy?

Our latest art installation is told across five screens with breathtaking imagery and striking soundscapes that explore deeply thought-provoking themes. Through poetry and film, this artwork invites you to consider the irrevocable change on people's lives and natural ecologies, an issue close to our hearts.

John Akomfrah

As a founding member of the Black Audio Film Collective, John has played a significant role in shaping Black British cultural discourse through his various artworks. His accolades include winning the Grierson Award in 1987 and the Artes Mundi Prize in 2017.

Join us to watch this outstanding British artist and filmmaker draw from history and identity as he takes us on a journey that began from Christopher Columbus’ arrival in the Americas in 1492 and how that resulted in irreversible global changes, through mass movement of plants, animals, disease and people.
