"Alive in Many Hands" The American Folklife Center at 50

Library Treasures Stored on Synthetic DNA
Open from July 1, 2026 through July 3, 2027
To mark America’s 250th anniversary, the Library of Congress has created a cutting-edge molecular data storage device featuring treasures from the Library’s collections, which has been placed in a time capsule in Philadelphia to be opened in 2276.
This small display features an identical copy of the miniature device, which uses synthetic DNA to store digital copies of specially selected Library materials. Learn more.

The Declaration's Promise: A Revolutionary Idea

Now on view in the David M. Rubenstein Treasures Gallery, “The Declaration’s Promise: A Revolutionary Idea” explores the principles of the Declaration of Independence and their impact on American history over the past 250 years.
With Thomas Jefferson's draft of the Declaration of Independence as the centerpiece, the exhibition draws on a wide variety of items from across the Library’s collections, including manuscripts, rare books, images, music, recordings, newspapers, poetry and popular culture from the 20th and 21st centuries. Together, these materials explore the ways Americans have used the Declaration as a framework for demanding rights and liberties and as inspiration for innovation and creative expression over the decades.
