BREAKING: Yesterday, The Intercept sued officials in Alvarado, Texas, to force them to stop withholding public records that could reveal new details about the Prairieland “antifa” terrorism case.

You probably know what happened at Prairieland. A group of anti-ICE activists were sentenced to more than 560 years in prison combined, including 30 years for one defendant who wasn't even at the protest. His crime? Moving a box of antifascist zines.

The defendants are now beginning to appeal these convictions, and we’re fighting to reveal information that was not presented at trial.

We’re done asking nicely. Now we’re taking them to court.

For months, Alvarado city officials and police have stonewalled us. The city asked the Texas attorney general three separate times whether it had to hand over the records, withdrew two of those inquiries, and then simply stopped responding to us.

This lawsuit wasn’t in our budget, and we’ve already spent every dollar we set aside for legal fights this year. But we won’t let Alvarado officials run out the clock.

The stakes go far beyond one Texas town. Prairieland is the government’s first set of convictions under President Donald Trump’s executive order designating antifa as a domestic terrorist organization. It’s also an early test of NSPM-7, the presidential directive the administration is using to try to crush dissent on the left. If these convictions stand, prosecutors across the country will have a playbook, and we’re already seeing similar cases in other states.

Alvarado officials are violating Texas public records law, and we intend to hold them accountable.
