In 1995, Mercedes-Benz was experimenting with self-driving technology decades before it became mainstream. Working with researchers at the University of the Bundeswehr Munich, Mercedes developed a modified S-Class capable of navigating highways using cameras and onboard computers.
The prototype completed a journey of over 1,000 miles from Munich to Denmark and back, handling approximately 95% of the trip autonomously and reaching speeds of nearly 110 mph.
