Outbreak Investigation of Salmonella: Sprouts (September 2026)

Do not eat, serve, or sell recalled broccoli sprouts grown by Evergreen Fresh Sprouts, LLC. FDA’s investigation is ongoing.

The FDA and CDC, in collaboration with state and local partners, are investigating illnesses in a multistate outbreak of Salmonella Bovismorbificans infections linked to recalled broccoli sprouts grown by Evergreen Fresh Sprouts, LLC of Moyie Springs, ID. This outbreak is currently being investigated separately from the shiga toxin-producing E. coli and Salmonella outbreak linked to alfalfa sprouts.

Based on epidemiological information collected by CDC and state partners, a total of 32 people infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella have been reported from six states. Illnesses started on dates ranging from July 7, 2026, to September 3, 2026. Of the 27 people interviewed, 26 (96%) reported eating sprouts or microgreens. Twenty-two reported specifically eating broccoli sprouts, and one reported eating a microgreen mix containing broccoli microgreens. There have been three hospitalizations and no deaths.

As part of this investigation, officials in Washington State collected and tested samples of Evergreen Fresh Sprouts-brand broccoli sprouts collected from a local grocery store and a sick person’s home. Both sprout samples tested positive and whole genome sequencing (WGS) analysis conducted by state partners and FDA showed they matched the same Salmonella Bovismorbificans strain that made people sick in this outbreak. This product was included in the recall and is no longer available for sale.

FDA is continuing its investigation to determine the source of contamination and if other products of concern may be on the market. This advisory will be updated with information as it becomes available.
