I think it's the clearest example I've got of a very specific trap. Meet Andre.
Andre spent six or seven years learning Chinese. Apps, dramas, YouTube, picked up wherever he could fit it around a full-time teaching job. He calls it "ad hoc learning." Here's what all that time actually got him. "I knew a huge amount of vocabulary, but I couldn't use that vocabulary in a sentence." Or, as he put it another way: "I was probably A1 in terms of vocabulary, but not A1 in terms of actually being able to use it." Six or seven years. Roughly beginner-level ability to actually say anything. Chinese made this worse, not better. It's a tonal language, and get the tone wrong and you've said something else entirely. Andre worked that out the hard way. "The app doesn't realise that, and the app doesn't know how to then help you." And there was nobody to catch it. "When you're by yourself, you might think you're more confident than you actually are." That's the quiet cost of learning alone. It's not just slow. You can't see your own gaps, so you keep practising your mistakes. Then he found StoryLearning VIP, and started working with his coach, Katherine. "She's been amazing in terms of helping piece together all these random things I knew to actually piece the language together." Six years of scattered knowledge, turned into speech he can actually use, in ten weeks with a real coach. And it's staying with him, too: "I feel like I've learned more. And also it's retained.
