I drilled spelling flashcards with my class every single week, Niepodam.
We practiced Monday through Thursday, but half my kids still bombed the Friday test.
Even my strong readers!
The kid who could read a chapter book out loud with all the voices would hand me a paper that spelled frend, becuz, and sed.
I had no idea what was going wrong and even less of an idea how to fix it.
But here’s what I know now…
Reading and spelling are two totally different jobs for a kid's brain.
It's like a song on the radio. You recognize it in about two notes, but if you try to sing every word from memory, suddenly you're just humming.
Reading a word means it's sitting right there in front of her.
Spelling it means pulling every letter out of her own head with nothing to look at.
Nobody ever explained that to us, which is exactly what this week's episode fixes.
English spelling is way less random than anybody told us.
