Donald Trump just banned major news outlets from the White House because he doesn’t like their coverage. That is an attack on the free press, plain and simple.

CNN, MS NOW, and Politico reporters were blocked from White House access, had their credentials revoked, and were shut out of the basic spaces journalists use to cover the president. Now they are suing to defend their First Amendment rights.

Presidents do not get to pick and choose which reporters are allowed to cover them based on whether the coverage is flattering. The White House belongs to the American people, not to Donald Trump.

A free press is one of the most important safeguards in any democracy. Journalists ask hard questions, expose corruption, document government action, and give the public information we have a right to know. When a president punishes reporters for doing that job, he is not just attacking media companies. He is attacking the public’s right to the truth.

Trump’s message is clear: praise him, or risk losing access. That is intimidation. It is retaliation. And it is exactly why the First Amendment exists.

If this is allowed to stand, the danger spreads far beyond three outlets. Any administration could threaten reporters, punish critical coverage, and turn public institutions into propaganda zones where only approved voices are allowed inside. We cannot let that happen.
