The Japan Foundation (JF) is pleased to announce an open call for Japanese Studies grant programs for the fiscal year 2027-2028. JF offers fellowship opportunities and institutional support programs for the development of Japanese Studies in the United States. 

Now accepting applications for the following programs for 2027-2028:

• Japanese Studies Fellowship Programs
• Institutional Project Support (IPS) Program**
• Institutional Project Support (IPS) - Small Grant Program**
• U.S.-Southeast Asia-Japan Collaboration and Exchange Initiative**

** - these grant programs require a concept paper to be submitted prior to the application

Japanese Studies Fellowship 2027-2028, Information Session

The Japan Foundation, New York will be offering an online information session about the Japanese Studies Fellowship application for 2027-2028 over Zoom. In this session, the Japanese Studies team at JFNY will explain the application process for the Long-Term, Short-Term and Doctoral Fellowships, as well as answer any specific questions that potential applicants may have.

Our Japan-U.S. Global Partnership and Japan America Society / Japan Society Building Grant Programs provide support for Japan-U.S. collaborative projects and for Japan America Societies and Japan Societies to help implement their missions.

Now Accepting Applications for the 2027 SSRC-JFNY Japan Global Workshop

Application Deadline: Oct. 1, 11:59pm ET (last call!)

The Japan Foundation New York (JFNY) and the Social Science Research Council (SSRC) invite applications to participate in the SSRC-JFNY Japan Global Workshop on the theme of Japan as a “country on the frontlines” or “harbinger state” and as a comparative or alternate lens/platform, to be held in Claremont, California, Feb. 2-5, 2027.

Open to applicants based in North America within ten years of their last degree, including Ph.D. candidates, who conduct active research or reporting in their careers.

Now Accepting Applications: SSRC–JF Next Generation Japan Studies Development Program

Applications due Nov. 1

The Japan Foundation and the Social Science Research Council are pleased to announce the next round of institutional grants for the “SSRC–JF Next Generation Japan Studies Development Program,” an initiative designed to cultivate interest in Japan and support the development of the next generation of scholars in Japanese Studies. 

This initiative comprises three components: 

• Study Tour Grants: for undergraduate and master’s students to travel to Japan 
• Postdoctoral Fellowships: for fellowships in the U.S.  
• Visiting Professor Grants: for Japanese professors to teach and research in the U.S. for up to 6 weeks 

DEADLINE: Nov. 1, 2026

Takeda Hideo’s Genpei: Defying Authority

Princeton University Art Museum (Princeton, NJ) 

Princeton University Art Museum presents Takeda Hideo’s Genpei series, a bold and satirical reimagining of the legendary conflict between the Genji and Heike clans. The exhibition re-situates the series within Takeda's career as a satirical cartoonist and in relation to a broader tendency to challenge outdated stereotypes and hypocritical values amid a wave of social and political upheaval in late twentieth-century Japan.

The Mud Room: Itinerant Artists, Folk Spectacles, and Painted Walls

On view until Nov. 29

Amant (Brooklyn, NY) 

Reflecting on the work and positions of artists, artisans, potters, and muralists whose lasting impressions on society have shaped our domestic and public spaces, this exhibition considers the gallery as a ceramic studio and the studio as a theater—a stage hosting narratives of collaboration, transmission and influence. Created by Matthew Lutz-Kinoy and developed with visiting collaborators Natsuko Uchino and Kazunori Hamana, the exhibition brings histories of craft as performance onto the stage.
