The problem you see is often not the real problem.

Take the fourth grader who reads soooo slowly. It looks like a fluency problem. So we give them fluency practice. Repeated readings.

And they stay slow.

For many of those kids, the real issue is underneath. They're still working hard to sound out words that should be automatic by now. Repeated reading alone can't fix that.

When we guess, we lose time. Weeks, sometimes months. And a struggling reader can't afford to lose that time, because the gap gets wider every year.
