Today’s Briefing

Trapped in China following a seven-year imprisonment, a Chinese pastor facing a terminal illness is petitioning President Donald Trump to help him return to his US family.

The demand for Christian films is growing, challenging filmmakers to balance truth with accessibility.

Niceness is not a biblical command, but that’s no license to crush other people’s spirits, writes Thomas Anderson.

A new book profiles a founding father most Americans don’t know.

Behind the Story

From senior news writer Cody Benjamin: As an avid movie fan, I’ve been captivated by what some have deemed a new "golden age" of Christian film. It got me thinking: If we really are in a prime time for faith-based media, what’s going to be the next version of The Chosen? I wanted to look beyond obvious tentpoles, so I spoke with filmmakers of smaller projects, such as those distributed through YouTube and Fathom Entertainment. How did they intend to break onto the scene without either watering down their faith or failing to draw eyeballs due to "faith-based" labels?

Richie Johns, a producer of the Moses "mockumentary" The Promised Land, told me their series doubles as a modern-day form of evangelism, not because it’s preachy but because it’s inviting. I found that to be a good explanation for why I’ve personally enjoyed the show. It’s accessible and amusing but has a clear reverence for the Bible. That’s the kind of template that seems to be gaining steam across the board but is also easier admired than executed—stories that don’t hide from their source material (i.e., the Bible or Christian foundations) but aren’t only out to preach to familiar crowds.

IN THE MAGAZINE

Cover Image of the September/October issue, 2026.

For our 70th anniversary issue, we’re studying the past. Excerpts from our archives show evangelicals in Billy Graham’s day and our own grappling with our place in public life. A new book offers a fascinating history of Christian womanhood—but makes a misleading argument, according to our reviewer. We’re also peering into the future. Artificial intelligence, GLP-1 drugs, anti-aging surgeries, next steps for the pro-life movement: These are some of the issues likely to occupy Christians for the next seven decades. But mostly, we’re spending time in the present: With a Honduran man who found himself pastoring in a Massachusetts jail while detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement. With the evangelical owners of a traditional Korean spa engaged in a religious freedom showdown. With faithful believers doing good work—a chef, an architect, a ball boy, a teacher (who, at age 91, is older than CT!). And with the writers of our newly expanded testimony section, who found God’s faithfulness in the midst of alien conspiracies, after a bad accident, and via an envelope in a refrigerator. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. Amid our own era’s change, conflict, and uncertainty, we hope this issue declares that reassuring truth.
