I got your note about the garden bed spacing. Honestly, I think eight inches between the tomato starts is too tight, especially for the indeterminate varieties we picked up. They get tall and bushy pretty quick. I would push it to twelve or fourteen at least, and maybe stagger the rows so the lower leaves get airflow. You asked about the marigolds too. I would put them at the corners rather than lining the whole border. They do help with nematodes, but the roots can compete for water in a small bed. For the basil, keep it closer to the edge where you can reach it without stepping over the peppers. The peppers need more sun than the basil anyway, so put the basil on the east side and let the peppers take the western half. I would also hold off on the straw mulch until the soil warms up a bit more. It has been a cool spring, and the straw can slow that warming down. Once you see the first true leaves on the squash, you can lay it down around the base. That is probably two weeks out. I have been looking at the trail maps you sent over, and I think the north loop is the better option for Saturday. The south loop has that long stretch of loose gravel that gets annoying after the first mile, and the elevation gain at the midpoint is steeper than the map suggests. I remember last spring they had to reroute part of it because of erosion, and the new section goes right through a boggy patch that never really dries out. The north loop is a little longer but the surface is more consistent, and there is that shaded overlook about two thirds of the way where we can stop for a breather. I would still bring the lighter jackets, because the wind picks up near the ridge even in the afternoon. For timing, I think meeting at the trailhead around eight thirty gives us enough time to finish before the afternoon clouds roll in. If we want to grab something after, the deli on the main road stays open until four, which is plenty of time. Let me know if you want to carpool or just meet there.
