Musicians number them instead of naming them. C is I, home. G is V, the pull back home. A minor is vi, the sad one. Home, away, sad: that's the engine under a huge share of popular music.  We colour chords by their NUMBER, not their name. Same three jobs, different key, and the colours never move. Look at G. In C it's teal, the V that pulls home. In G it's orange, the I, home itself. Say the numbers out loud as you land them: one, five, six. Then put the thumb to work: pattern 1 on C for a bar, on Am for a bar. You're Travis picking a progression.
