If you want your playing to sound more like bluegrass guitar, one of the best things you can do is study the vocabulary of the great players who came before us.
And it’s hard to think of anyone more influential than Tony Rice.
So in today’s new lesson, I’m going to teach you:
5 Tony Rice licks every bluegrass picker should know.
But I don’t want you to just memorize five licks and add them to a collection you never actually use.
For each lick, I’ll show you both a 2-bar version and a shorter 1-bar version so you can start seeing how these ideas can be moved around and adapted.
Then we’ll actually put them into music.
I’ll show you how to plug the 2-bar licks into “Will The Circle Be Unbroken” and how to use the 1-bar licks in “Your Love Is Like A Flower.”
That’s where this stuff starts getting really useful.
Because the goal isn’t simply to know a Tony Rice lick.
It’s to begin recognizing these sounds as part of the language of bluegrass guitar—and eventually become comfortable using that language in your own playing.
