Phase 3 Work to Start on Four Mile Run Drive

Arlington County will soon begin interim improvements for Phase 3 of the South Four Mile Run Drive Complete Streets Project, covering the section between South George Mason Drive and South Walter Reed Drive. The project includes roadway reconstruction, repaving, and restriping to improve the corridor and is scheduled to run from mid-September through mid-October, with final pavement markings completed by late October.

Construction Schedule

• Median removal: Sept. 17-18, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., weather permitting.
• Roadway repairs: Full-depth repairs will begin Sept. 21 and continue for approximately four weeks. Work will occur weekdays from 7 a.m. to 5 a.m., weather permitting.
• Some milling and paving work may occur at night to reduce impacts on daytime traffic. Additional details will be shared separately.
• Restriping: Scheduled 1-2 weeks after paving is completed. Work will occur weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is expected to last about five working days.

Traffic Impacts

Access to homes and businesses will be maintained whenever possible, although some turns may be temporarily restricted during active construction.

Street parking will close during this work starting on Monday, September 21. “No Parking” signs will be installed one week in advance.

Throughout the project:

• One lane of traffic in each direction will remain open.
• Beginning the week of Sept. 21, the two center lanes will be closed 24 hours a day while crews complete repairs, and traffic will shift to the outside lanes.
• Once center-lane work is complete, traffic will be moved to those lanes while the outside lanes are repaired.

These improvements are part of the County’s safety, access and comfort for everyone who uses the corridor, including people walking, biking, taking transit and driving. Residents and travelers should expect temporary traffic changes and allow extra travel time during construction.
