You know when you get asked something completely out of the blue and it takes a second to figure out what they actually want to know? Yeah that happened to me yesterday.
I was walking back from the corner store and my neighbor stopped me to ask about the best way to keep herbs alive on a tiny balcony. I just stood there for a minute because I forgot the name of the thing that mixes into the soil. She thought I was ignoring her.
Anyway, I ended up writing the whole list down later that night. Cilantro needs more shade than you think. Basil can handle the afternoon sun if you water it early enough. Mint will absolutely take over everything if you let it. Rosemary is basically indestructible unless you drown it.
She wants to grow thyme too but her railing gets too much wind. I said maybe try a heavier pot so it does not tip over every time the wind picks up. Then she asked if I wanted to take some mint because hers is already spreading everywhere.
So now I have a container of mint on my kitchen counter and I am trying to figure out if I can freeze it. I think I might muddle a bunch into some lemonade this week. If that works out I will bring some over to her place and maybe swap for a couple of rosemary sprigs.

I finally got around to organizing the little shelf near the back window. You would not believe how many loose screws I found just sitting there.
Half of them are the same size but I could not tell which ones came from the bookshelf and which ones came from the old TV stand. I ended up sorting them into small jars because I could not bring myself to throw them away.
Now the whole corner feels like a mini hardware aisle and honestly it is kind of comforting. My brother came over and gave me a hard time about it. He said one day I will open a drawer and find a hundred random washers.
He is not wrong. I did find a washer while I was sweeping. It was behind the plant stand, near the baseboard. No idea where it belongs. Probably the same mystery place as all the spare Allen keys.
I think next week I will finally patch that spot on the wall where the old shelf used to be. It has been painted over twice but the outline still shows through when the light hits it just right. Maybe I will use the good paint this time instead of the sample can.
Anyway, hope your weekend is slower than mine usually turns out to be. Let me know if you ever want to borrow the screwdriver set that has the stubby handle. It is not great for everything but it comes in handy more than I expected.
