| Citigroup to Launch Tokenized Deposit Remittance for Japanese Corporates by 2026 |
- Citigroup plans to roll out blockchain-based tokenized deposit remittance services for Japanese corporate clients by the end of 2026, using a permissioned ledger to move funds between Japan and five overseas Citi hubs in what would be the first such offering in Japan by a foreign bank.
- The tokenized deposits are already used for about US$1b of Citi’s daily US$6t in funds moved, and Japan’s rules allow these instruments to pay yield, which creates regulatory room for banks to build yield-paying products on top of the tokens.
- Citigroup shares trade around US$137.80, with the stock up about 16.1% year to date.
The key question is whether Japan’s yield-friendly framework for tokenized deposits helps Citi deepen its corporate relationships in Asia or mainly serves as early-stage infrastructure experimentation with limited near-term revenue impact.
